Role of American Institute of Architects in the Building Industry

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is a certified professional body for architects in the US. AIA provides educational, community redevelopment, government advocacy, and public support to improve the public image of these experts. It has its head offices in Washington, D.C, and networks with design and construction teams to coordinate the building sector. Robert Ivy is the current head of AIA.


AIA was established in 1857 in New York. AIA was founded by a group of 13 architects who wanted to promote scientific and practical perfection of other building professionals. The founders first used New York Society of Architects as the name of the organization before changing it to American Institute of Architects. Their mission was to promote the practical, artistic, and scientific profession of the members, elevate profession standing, facilitate good fellowship, and combine ideas from different architects for the advancements of the art. They invited members from Albany, Chicago, Baltimore, and Boston.


AIA has over 90,000 associated experts and architects as members. The associates must adhere to the professional conduct and code of ethics that intends to assure members and public of the highest dedication of architects. The US has an independent unit that license architect members. American Institute of Architects has different membership levels that include associate, international associate, emeritus, allied, and the national members. The American Institute of Architecture Students admits learners.


Board of Directors governs the body. It has more than 200 permanent employees. The organization functions as a national entity with 300 local and state outlets. The branches are in US, UK, Japan, Hong Kong, and Europe.


AIA unites architects to voice their grievances and promote their professionals. They influence government rulings that affect their practices and the general quality of life in America. The movement monitors regulatory and legislative actions and takes advantage of the collective powers of its affiliation to take part in making federal and local decisions. American Institute of Architects offers professional growth opportunities, information services, and resources to members.

Ivy Roberts

Ivy Roberts is an editor and has led various national publications such as Dean & Ivy and a critic, Architectural Record, and Dean/Dale. During his tenure, Architectural Record won honors like the premier magazine journalism award, 26 Jesse H. Neal Award, and an unusual achievement for a professional journal.

Robert Ivy won the Crain Award and McGraw-Hill Award. He is a member of the Design Futures Council. The Alpha Rho Chi nominated Robert Ivy as the master architect due to his effectiveness in passing design value.

One of the oldest professional organizations in the United States is the American Institute of Architects (AIA), established in 1857. In the 19th century people who had no business calling themselves an architect did so, bringing disrepute to the profession. The AIA was formed by a group of 13 architects in New York City who wanted to clean their profession’s image and establish professional standards all of their members adhered to. Soon there were chapters in many other cities around the United States such as Boston, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and St. Louis among other cities.
The AIA is now headquartered in Washington D.C. They continue to advocate for those in their profession and it presently has over 90,000 licensed architects and professionals from associated professions as members. They have five levels of membership that members can apply for depending on their skills and experience.
The AIA is  led by Robert Ivy who is the CEO and EVP. He earned these roles in February 2011 due to his vast experience in the industry. He attended The University of the South where he earned a bachelor of arts in English in 1965. His master’s degree in architecture was earned in 1976 when he graduated from Tulane University.
Robert Ivey attained his most prominent position to date when he joined McGraw-Hill Companies in October 1996. He was responsible for the globe’s leading architectural journal, Architectural Record. He also oversaw many of their other publications such as Greensource, Engineering News Record, and Record in China among others. He stayed with Mcraw-Hill until 2011 when he left to join the AIA as its top executive.
One of the most important things an architect can do, according to Robert Ivy, is to use their designs to promote safety, health, and welfare for its occupants. He says that many people in the industry don’t really think about these issues because it’s told to them so much it just becomes a blur. He has come up with new terms to drive these points home so that architects are always mindful of these issues. For example, he’s dropped the part about “welfare” and now calls it “well-being” and encourages others to do likewise.
